Our feeding programme runs on a daily basis throughout the year in Mukuru kwa Njenga slum in Nairobi.
It was started a few years ago after the school we supported in the slum were worried about their pupils who were falling asleep in class and couldn’t concentrate. They found that many were hungry having had no breakfast that morning and often no meal the previous evening. The school wanted to somehow provide food for the kids but did not have the funds.
Jengana stepped in, thanks to our supporters, and now provides a hot nutritious meal every lunchtime for all 200 children. Depending on the cost of the lunch they sometimes have money left over for a mid morning porridge drink called uji too.
With extra funding we would love to be in the position to provide two meals every day.
